River's Edge Gallery Art Classes

Sustainably Sadie
River’s Edge Gallery Art Classes

I write this article a little bit selfishly…but I suppose that most of my writing is derived from my selfish desires.  I want to encourage those in our local community to check out the art classes offered at the River’s Edge Gallery in Twin Bridges this fall.  This past Saturday was an oil painting class using the Bob Ross Technique.  There is a Watercolor Workshop the weekend of Sept. 28 and Jewelry Camp! Friday October 19 and Saturday October 20th.

The selfish part—I need people to sign up for the Jewelry making class because I desperately want to take this workshop that focuses on bead and wire wrapping jewelry.  Classes have been cancelled if not enough people sign up—which makes sense, the instructors (who are offering incredible rates for these opportunities) need so many bodies in the room to make it worth their time.  Our daughter, Eva and I took one of Ruby Montie’s classes in the past at the Gallery and it was not only a wonderful bonding experience for daughter and I but we also learned a lot.  Those new talents can be transformed into beautiful handmade creations that you can wear or gift to friends and family.

The cost of the jewelry making workshop is only $40 for six hours of instruction—split into 3 hours Friday afternoon and 3 hours Saturday morning.  The Watercolor Workshop, taught by Joanne Simpson of Polson, is $125 for all three days of instruction, 9 am to 4 pm, or $50 per day if you aren’t able to attend all three days.   These are incredibly affordable experiences and we, as a community, are so lucky to have these opportunities.

The River’s Edge Gallery is open through the month of September, Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment.  Contact Therese Hutchinson of the Main Street Market at riversedgegallery@hotmail.com or call 406-684-5111 with questions.  It’s not too late (or early) to shop the Gallery for gifts (think Christmas).  There is a little bit of everything and lots of affordable items from Montana artists.  Check out the River’s Edge Gallery Facebook page.

Farmer's Market Fun

Sustainably Sadie
Farmer’s Market Fun

My husband and I took a turn as acting Market Master for the Twin Bridges Farmer’s Market the last two weekends.  Those Saturday mornings, we wore 2 hats, still trying to serve up coffee and sandwiches at our drive-thru espresso shop, Jumping Rainbow Espresso, and as marketeers, connecting with other vendors and selling baked goods.

My baking inspiration leading into that first weekend was pizza crusts.  At the grocery store lately, I noticed that I would consider throwing a Boboli crust in my cart for an easy dinner solution.  But I know I can make those crusts with my handy-dandy bread recipe I gleaned from Mother Earth News years ago.  So I rolled out crusts and hand-rolled dinner rolls.  I also enlisted the idea my mom brought me a few years ago from the Missoula Farmer’s Market, pies in half-pint mason jars.  That handy-dandy Mother Earth News bread recipe also makes cinnamon rolls so I whipped up a couple of those.

Week Two’s inspiration:  whoopie pies!  And the cool weather had me thinking pumpkin so our table was filled with pumpkin whoopie pies, apple and apple-cranberry mason jar pies, no-bake pumpkin cheesecake and more cinnamon rolls.

The time at the Farmer’s Market passes quickly.  The Hutterites are a big draw, with their bulk produce perfect for canning and savvy sales techniques, customers from all over the Ruby Valley show up just to fill their vehicles with Hutterite goodies.  I wish we had more local produce at our local market.  Anyone can set up a booth, pay the nominal $3.00 fee and spend the morning connecting with the local community.  “If you make it, bake it, or grow it, you can market it!”  A person could grow kitchen herbs in pots and sell them.  Your kids can take their latest craft projects and turn a profit.  I have a few crochet projects I would like to add to our table, but I can’t bake and craft at the same time – I am coming to realize.

It takes community involvement to make local farmer’s market successful.  Let the dedication of a few, inspire you to spend a Saturday morning (or Thursday evening in Sheridan) earning a couple of extra bucks, connecting with friends in the community, and enjoying your local farmer’s market.  The local farmer’s markets need your creativity and participation in order to make them great!

Portion Control

Sustainably Sadie
Portion Control

“Only take what you need,” seemed like a mantra this summer.  Even in restrooms of large box stores, it isn’t necessary to dole out eight feet of paper towel, it’s just wasteful.  But the child isn’t alone using/ taking more than needed when faced with a large amount of something.  It’s human nature to take more from a large quantity and less from a small quantity.

Buying in bulk can save you money (not always), but an important tip I read a while ago was to transfer dish soap from a large container into a small container.  What happens when we use large containers, we subconsciously use a larger amount of product because with our eyes we see large container which translates to large amount—probably using more than is needed to get the job done.  So if you buy a 64 oz bottle of dish detergent because it is more cost effective, when you get home transfer some of the product into a smaller container, and you probably can dilute the dish soap with water to extend the life of it.  Keep the small bottle up on the counter and hide the large bottle under the sink.

A similar line of thought is to break down bulk food purchases into their appropriate portions – buying items already broken down into portion sizes for diet rationing brings a lot of extra packaging into the home and eventually the landfill.  If you buy family size, large packages can be broken down into small Tupperware containers, small mason jars, or other reusable containers.  Kid snacks can be portioned out in many cute ways that make it easy to grab a snack on the go.

There are many products and guidelines out there to follow for appropriate food portions—something Americans have to scale down since we’ve become a supersized nation.  Besides the artistically designed plates and charts, there is the new trend of cooking all sorts of main dishes in muffin tins.  Individual meat loafs, pizzas, macaroni and cheese, lasagna, pies and so on are helpful for appropriate (and kid!) portions and they take less time to cook in the oven.  I also love how everything can be made in a mason jar these days, pies and desserts of all sorts and a great way to take a salad to work.

Remember to watch your portions, which include how much dish soap you use to wash dishes and how much chocolate you consume.  (It is better to let yourself to indulge a little bit, than to deny yourself to the point of binging).
